A Practical Grand Tour
This is the itinerary I put together for people who want South Africa done properly, without the padding. It gives you the two things this country does better than almost anywhere on earth — Cape Town and the Winelands, then a genuine Big Five safari in the Greater Kruger — in a week that never feels rushed and never wastes a day in transit.
I keep the routing simple on purpose: one direct flight between Cape Town and the Kruger region, no unnecessary overnight stops, and a Johannesburg finish that turns your last day into something worth doing rather than a layover. Every property on this route is one I know personally, chosen for value that holds up, not just a low rate.
Cape Town
Arrive at Cape Town International and transfer privately to your hotel in the City Bowl or V&A Waterfront. The rest of the day is yours to settle in — I'd suggest an easy first evening watching the sun go down from Signal Hill or Camps Bay before the itinerary properly begins.
Cape Town
A cable car ascent of Table Mountain first thing, while the light and the queues both work in your favour. In the afternoon, a private guide takes you through the Bo-Kaap, District Six, and — if you choose — Robben Island, before dinner in the City Bowl.
Stellenbosch & Franschhoek
A full day out to the Winelands — Stellenbosch for its oaks and architecture, Franschhoek for its valley views and its food. Two or three tastings, a proper long lunch, and a scenic return over Helshoogte Pass as the light turns gold.
Cape Town → Hoedspruit, Greater Kruger
A morning flight to Hoedspruit, in the heart of the Greater Kruger, with a private transfer straight into camp for lunch. Your first game drive goes out in the late afternoon, timed for the animals waking with the cooler air — a gentle but proper introduction to the bush.
Greater Kruger
Two game drives today — dawn and dusk — with the heat of the day free for the pool, a spa treatment, or simply watching the waterhole from your deck. This is the rhythm the whole safari runs on, and it's the one most people ask to keep going forever.
Greater Kruger
A guided walking safari this morning — a completely different way to read the bush, tracks and dung and birdsong instead of engine noise — followed by an afternoon game drive. By now most guests have had their sighting; if not, today is usually the day.
Hoedspruit → Johannesburg
One last dawn game drive, then a late-morning flight to Johannesburg. The afternoon is set aside for the Apartheid Museum and, if you'd like it, a guided tour of Soweto — the single best way to understand the country you've just spent a week in.
Johannesburg
A private transfer to OR Tambo International for your onward or homebound flight.
